The Short Life of Sparrows eBook Emm Cole SK Munt
While my Goodreads-review is one hot mess of emotions, I will try to keep this informative. But don't blame me if I start composing sonnets and waxing poetic about my heart being broken and my soul being healed. It's just that good a book!Ok. Facts.
This book was free of charge when I got it - but I promised nothing in exchange. Not even a review. The five stars are all my genuine rating and the words are very much my own. (You can tell by how they are all over the place and not eloquent and vividly expressive like Ms Cole's!)
Emm Cole has fashioned a world of Seers and Nightbloods. Some might call them witches and warlocks. (Just don't do it in front of Calli...) This take on the paranormal - or whatever you prefer to call it - is fresh and new and feels genuinely well thought out. There's a myth and a lore - but there's also the ordinary day to day struggle within this reality.
The narration shifts between Isaiah and Calli. Their voices are very distinct and I promise that you won't get confused. However, they are also seemlessly interwoven, so no choppy mental whiplashes for you either.
None of the characters are perfect. There. I said it! But you know what? That is undoubtedly the intention. Perfection is boring and unrealistic!
Because, you see, instead of cardboard cutouts, this book is full of people. Just as in real life there are some you will love, some you will want to export right out into reality and make your best friend, some you will loathe... and some that will just be an annoying shafing presence that makes the lack of them feel so much better, and while there are several characters to keep track of, it never gets messy or confusing. They all have a backstory and the story develops at a comfortable rate where it's easy to follow but never slow.
This book is, in my opinion, a must read. It has a unique and fresh paranormal world. It has a wonderfully beautiful, descriptive language that will make you re-read entire passages over and over just because they are so perfect. There are laugh-out-loud bits. There are one-liners you will wish you thought of first. There are parts that will make you want to buy an extra copy just for highlighting. There are moments when you won't be able to stop crying.
In short, this is a mesmerising tale of life, getting to know yourself and of magic.
Especially the magic of love, trust and friendship. And a little bit about magic that will have snow make your heart ache.
I recommend a box of tissues and some free time. You will not want to put the book down, and you will cry.
If nothing else, because it ends.

The Short Life of Sparrows eBook Emm Cole SK Munt Reviews
*A complimentary copy of this ebook was given to me by the author in exchange for my honest review.
Wow!! This was an extraordinary tale of friendship, love, & magic. When I say love, I'm talking about the different kinds of love, not just between a man & woman but also between mother & son and father & daughter, with everything in between & beyond. I must say again that I love Emm Cole & her storytelling. The way she draws you in to her story to how she makes you cling to her characters as if you've truly known them since childhood. As with every book I read, I try to figure out how it'll turn out but with this story I was completely baffled at how the events unfolded. With twists and turns to keep you glued to your reading device, I know I was held captive by this story. I love books like this one!! In my last status update, I stated I was a blubbering mess. Yes, yes I was because my heart was broken but as broken as it may be the ending was a triumph with a certain couple taking control of their lives. I loved it. I feel like my review isn't doing this book justice. It was such a magnificent, magical, scary at times, & bittersweet read. Once again, wow!!
First of all, the cover is beautiful and really sets the tone for the book.
This story didn’t end up being anything I expected, and the author does a great job of presenting something fresh and new. The characters are incredibly well-crafted, and the relationships between the characters are this book’s greatest strengths. The world of magic here is far less flashy and fantastical than some might expect. But don’t get me wrong, there’s some pretty cool use of magic too… and some really creepy magic.
I loved how this society was seeped in a history that made these people unique, peculiar, powerful, and truly damaged all at once. They care for each other, overstep/abuse each other, and judge each other so that there’s something tragic about these people who get to use magic but also have to deal with the consequences. Calli’s perspective on her people is helpful from the beginning, and I loved what a strong character she is while also having to navigate her role in this world.
The troubling vision Calli has at the beginning of her adventure adds an underlying tension to everything that happens (avoiding spoilers). Isaiah, caught up in all this while also an outsider, is a great character that you grow to really, really care about. By the time the truth(s) are revealed, there’s a lot else going on, but it all fits together and makes sense. The twists toward the end of the book add a new level to everything you’ve read, and I loved how it all connected.
I also enjoyed how the author handled the romances of the story. Each relationship was completely natural while simultaneously being very complicated, and I was really glad to see how familial love ended up being every bit as significant as romantic love. The ending really drove this home, and it was a bittersweet but really meaningful end.
