Sunwise Turn A Human Comedy of Bookselling Madge Jenison 9781879923065 Books
A fascinating account of how to start a business from ground zero...in the early 1900's! Ms. Jenison's new bookstore in NYC was named the Sunwise Turn, and she gives us every detail, including the money she needed to keep the store going, salaries, expenses, rent, everything! Here is an excerpt where she talks about how important it is to interact with the patrons: And thus, not because we thought of it, but because selling books is a very human thing, the shop became a very human place...If a fat boy called up to ask us if we knew of a room with a southern exposure for his sister; or anyone inquired if we knew any way of getting a musical education for a boy violinist whose father was a waiter at the Biltmore; or if we knew a veterinary for Mme. Pavlova's dog; or where you could buy peacock's eggs...we always said "Yes." How can you resist this?!Vintage, of course, with faded green cloth covers and a blue binding. Pages are uneven, in that charming way. Highly recommended.

HOWEVER, any real or interested bookseller would notice that this edition, 1993, is published by a COPYCAT publisher, who lifted the entire book from the original 1923 hardback! Shame on you!
Real book lovers and sellers want the real deal, not some paperback for-profit xeroxed copy!
I agree with the other reviewer, that reading this account of a NYC avant-garde bookstore in the early 1920s is a treat for booksellers and anyone else interested in books. The tone is a delicate balance, dealing with serious aims in a light style, and brings the reader into a time and place nicely. Also, no one should feel hesitant about reading it in the Booksellers House paperback reprint. It's not a cheap xerox, and is in fact published by a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Booksellers Association, a nonprofit trade association that promotes independent bookstores.
