This is the perfect book for someone to read who is interested in medicine, women's history and the Civil War. Robin Oliveira. I have read many book in both areas but not in the same book. The story is fictional but all the details about the history of medicine and status of women are true. I happened to be in a great of pain on the day I started it! I went to ER and was admitted for about four days. I am so glad that I took this book with me. I had discussions about the book with nurses, technicians and a social worker, all five of them now want to read this book.

The author is a master at writing, I never got bored or confused. I was glued to book in one particular scene when a young man's leg had to be amputated. The Mary Sutter character was so determined to learn, learn, learn. She had already mastered being a midwife and dreamed of being a surgeon.

I am so thrilled with this book that I am already searching out more books about women in the Civil War. I would not change a word in this book. I am definitely a fan of Robin Oliviera now.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. It is a nice departure from many of the other books written about the Civil War. It is well researched. The descriptions of the battle scenes and the field and make-shift hospitals makes you feel like you are there sharing the experience with the characters.

This is a work of historical fiction about a young midwife named Mary Sutter, who wants to become a surgeon. She is very skilled, but she is turned down by medical schools and private surgeons. She decides to join the war as a nurse in hopes of learning surgery and secretly travels from Albany to Washington DC. Once there, she still has a hard time getting a job and is turned away by Dorothea Dix for being too young. She ends up being accepted by a desperate surgeon at the Union Hotel Hospital. She lives and works in squalid conditions and eventually ends up at the battlefield at Antietam, the site of the worst loss of lives in any battle. It is here that the exhausted and understaffed surgeon teaches her how to do amputations.

But this is more than a novel about war and medicine. It is also a story about family, sacrifice, loss, and love. In Albany, Mary lives with her widowed mother (who taught her midwifery), her twin sisters, and younger brother. Mary meets their neighbor, a young man named Tom. They seem mutually attracted until he sees Mary’s more attractive twin. Two surgeons, James Blevens and William Stripp, are both attracted to her strength and skill. She is drawn to them as well, but still has feelings for Tom. Once Mary is finally working as a nurse in Washington, her mother calls her home to attend to her sister in childbirth. Mary resists for some time with tragic consequences.

Ms. Oliveira is a skilled writer to be able to juggle so many big storylines without the book being overwhelmed with plots and characters. The writing is quite good and the appearance of several historical figures such as President Lincoln, Dorothea Dix, and General John McClellan do not seem forced or out of place. I learned new things about the Civil War and enjoyed a page-turning novel at the same time. The character of Mary Sutter is an inspiring example of a strong and determined woman. I highly recommend this book and I would read other work by the author.
I envision a young Katherine Hepburn in the role of Mary. This is a perfect blend of history and fiction as viewed from the ground level of life and war. I literally could not stop reading. A five star rating, for me, means a character that is so real and identifiable, that will be remembered as an old friend.
This is the most beautifully written book I have read in a very long time and that alone was a treat. Others reviewers have quoted from the book. The line that touched me was from a battlefield scene, "They were still, like him, only half a moment past innocence." This resonated with me and I believe is descriptive of every character in the book, even Lincoln himself. The Civil War was writ large in blood and suffering and evolved into what no one imagined at the beginning - a four year long slog through death, destruction, inadequacies and failings of staggering magnitudes on both sides. Families suffered great loses, and Mary's was no exception. I didn't find it depressing but only honestly descriptive, realistic and poignant. War is hell. How would anyone sugar coat it. Why would anyone want to. It was immensely interesting to read of the medical aspects. Instead of recruiting surgeons from the recently fought Crimean War who would have been experienced with battle wounds, we chose to go it with hometown doctors who read how to do their first amputations from medical journals. There was no regard to sanitation, and most soldiers died from infection rather than the ineptness of some surgeons. This novel does not read like a text book as some have implied. It is historical fiction and exceptionally good. It does not grovel in despair or become maudlin but retains its focus on Mary, the people who love her and how she responds to them and the war she has chosen to wage to save lives and herself. She is a sympathetic and honorable heroine. I urge you to read.
This is not only the story of a woman who wanted to be a surgeon, when women were not considered good enough, but it is also the story of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of those who were sick, maimed, or surgical patients. It shows a war which was a drain on all of society, which was something unique, at least to me. Yes, battles are waged and won or lost as history shows, but there is the human misery, lack of proper medical care, lack of proper hospitals, and dedicated nurses, doctors, and others who struggled despite the lack of materials needed. I totally enjoyed this book because it was a look back at history, but it was history as seen through the common eye of the day and not a soldier's or commander's.
